I recently turned 61 years old and a small group of us have decided to invest our time and energy into this new construction related business we call Trestles. I may be suffering from early symptoms of dementia to take on this level of risk at this stage of my life, but my family is supportive and hey, I’m a contractor, that’s what we do.
That reminds me of the joke about the old contractor that wins the lottery. One of his close friends says, “Bill that’s great! You have worked so hard your entire life. Now you can retire comfortably.” Bill says, “Retire? Who said anything about retiring?” His friend says, “What are you going to do with all that money?” Bill responds, “Well, I'm going to keep building with it until its gone!”We think we have a good idea, we’re having fun and I really like and trust the people I am working with. Besides that, playing really bad golf every day is not all that great. Can we talk about golf? Stephen Curry just shot 74 -74 in a pro golf tournament! Unbelievable! Ok sorry not a golf forum.
So, for quite some time now, our marketing person has been trying to educate me on inbound marketing strategies and the importance of original content for our blog. She had to practically hit me over the head with a 2 x 4, but the fog is beginning to clear.
Blogging scares the hell out of me.
The industry is full of some really smart, amazing people and I thought blogging was about convincing you that I am smarter than all of those people. Doing that, would definitely be a hard sell. I’m not sure what I like better; when I was young and thought I knew everything, or now when I realize how little I know. She told me to just write about my love of the industry, the people that I admire, my own lessons learned (fuck-ups) and do some story telling that I think people in the business might relate to.
With that said, I am going to give it a shot. We’ll see how it goes. I am going to be careful not to represent my opinions as fact and I am going to try really hard not to piss anyone off (probably not too good for business, right?). Even though our services and products are by far superior to our competitors, and cost less, I will not use this forum to pitch them. 😊
